Häufige Fragen

Wechseln - Einlegen des Poo Paper
Quick and Easy Changing

1. Super easy to change, just like disposable diapers.

2. Our Poo Paper catches stool.

Entsorgen - Anlegen der Windel
Disposal - but without plastic

1. The Poo Paper is disposed of. It is made of paper and disintegrates within a few days.

Waschen - Abnehmen der Windel
Hygienic Washing

1. Used diapers go into our Wetbag.

2. The Wetbag goes into the washing machine with the diapers inside, where they are then hygienically cleaned. At the end, you just undo the zipper so the diapers tumble out of the Wetbag in the washing machine.

3. You can air dry or tumble dry your Judes.

The larger the Judes set, the less often you need to wash it. For example, with an All-In set, you only need to wash your Judes every 4 days. Thus, a larger set also incurs fewer washing costs.

Cost calculation per Judes set

We base this on the average diapering period with Judes: 2 years and 3 months (see our survey of over 5,000 parents). We are working on the assumption that you are diapering full-time with Judes Family.

Per wash load, the costs amount to 71 cents (approx. 41 cents for electricity, drinking and wastewater, and approx. 30 cents for detergent costs). Some washing machines are cheaper, others are more expensive.

Per dryer load, it costs about 0.50 cents to dry using a modern one and about €1.20 for an old dryer. We have used the average value of 0.85 cents in this calculation.

Laundry costs depending on the set size

Part-Time (needs to be washed every day): 365 days x 2 years and 3 months x 0.71 cents = €583.

Dryer costs would be €822.

Small (needs to be washed every other day): 182 days x 2 years and 3 months x 0.71 cents = €291. Dryer costs would be €411.

Standard (only needs to be washed every third day): 122 days x 2 years and 3 months x 0.71 cents = €194. Dryer costs would be €233.

All-In (only needs to be washed every fourth day): 122 days x 2 years and 3 months x 0.71 cents = €146. Dryer costs would be €175.

Conclusion

You can save significantly on washing and drying costs by opting for a larger Judes set. Especially if you use a dryer, it makes financial sense to choose a larger Judes set.

Child Development:

Current research shows that children have been becoming diaper-free later since people started using disposable diapers.

Large Meta-Analysis, published in the Journal of Pediatric Urology:

A major meta-analysis concludes that children with disposable diapers become dry later. It examined eight studies. There is a correlation between use of disposable diapers and delayed continence in children.

Our own study:

We conducted a survey with over 5,000 parents. Some used disposable diapers, others used Judes. The results are clear:

children with Judes become diaper-free 8 months earlier, on average.

Interestingly, 23% of children diapered with disposable diapers are diapered for 3.5 years or longer (about 1 in 4 children). Less than 1% of children with Judes were diapered for more than 4 years.

Health

Skin Health:

According to Spiegel (see link), a French authority has issued a strong warning against the use of disposable diapers. They contain concerning ingredients such as perfumes, pesticides, and PAHs. Current manufacturing regulations are not enough.

Fertility:

Researchers warn that diapers that are "too warm" are a reason for declining fertility in Western countries (see summary of the study here and Spiegel article here).

Thanks to their organic cotton, Judes are breathable and adopt the body's natural temperature.

Washing with Judes takes about 15 minutes per week (about 8 minutes with a dryer).

Changing is about as quick as with disposable diapers since it works with the same handles.

In comparison: Parents who use disposable diapers (survey of 5,000 parents) estimate that the time spent shopping for and throwing out disposable diapers comes to an average of 31 minutes per week.

Overall, you still save significantly more time with Judes because: children with Judes become diaper-free on average 8 months earlier than children who were diapered with disposable diapers (as per our survey of 5,000 parents)

Children who wear Judes or combine them with disposable diapers often become dry 2 years earlier than with disposable diapers alone (on average almost 1 year).

This is because children with Judes receive natural bio-feedback which they can learn from. Disposable diapers are designed to always feel dry. This leads to children with disposable diapers becoming diaper-free later.

We conducted a survey with more of 5,000 parents with astonishing results.

Disposable diapers generate approximately 1 tonne of plastic waste per child over the entire time that they are in diapers. Each additional child will contribute the same amount of plastic waste.

While there are compostable disposable diapers and disposable diapers made from recycled plastic, they can't be composted or recycled in waste systems and end up being general waste.

About 8% of general waste in Germany is from disposable diapers.

Here is how we calculate the plastic waste prevented by using our Judes diaper sets:

Classic Part-Time Set

This set is usually used to diaper half the time with Judes. This set includes only one size, so it can only be used for about half of the time that your child is wearing diapers. Disposable diapers create 1 tonne of plastic waste, thus approximately 500 kg of plastic waste is generated in half the diapering time. Since parents using the Part-Time set diaper half the time with Judes, they can prevent 250 kg of plastic waste with the Judes Classic Part-Time Set.

Classic Small Set

This set is usually used to change with Judes 75% of the time. We assume that half of the diapering duration is covered by this set, as it includes only one size. Thus, 375 kg of plastic waste can be prevented with this set.

Classic Standard and All-In Sets

These sets are typically used to diaper entirely with Judes. We assume that half of the diapering duration is covered by this set, as it includes only one size. Therefore, 500 kg of plastic waste, half of a tonne, can be prevented with these sets.

Premium Sets

The Premium sets include both sizes, allowing for diapering with Judes throughout the entire diapering period. If using the Premium Part-Time set, 500 kg of plastic waste is prevented through Judes. With the Small set, it's 750 kg, and with the "Standard" and "All-In" Premium sets, you can save approximately 1 tonne of plastic waste when compared with disposable diapers.

Learn more about how sustainable Judes really are compared to disposable diapers here.

In our calculation, we use the average diaper price (across all sizes) for the following brands:

  • €0.27 (Pampers)
  • €0.34 (Eco by Naty)
  • €0.31 (Lillydoo)
  • €0.35 (Lillydoo Green)

As of 06/05/22 at dm.

The average of these prices is 32 cents. We will use this diaper price for the following calculations.

Children should be changed every 2-3 hours, so we assume 7 diapers per day (in 24 hours). We also assume that children who use disposable diapers will need diapers for an average of 3 years.

From these assumptions, the following calculation arises:
3 years x 365 days x 7 changes at €0.32 each = €2,434.

Additionally, the costs for a diaper pail (€15), refill cartridges (approximately €67 per year), wet wipes (approximately €98 per year), and changing pads (approximately €17 per year) need to be calculated. We factor in the use of 9 wet wipes per day at €0.03 each (average price). This results in total cost of €561 for disposable diaper accessories.

The total costs from disposable diapers and accessories amount to €2,995 after 3 years of diapering.

This means that about €1,000 per year is spent on disposable diapers. However, many children require disposable diapers for more than 4 years (about 25% of children), making the use of disposable diapers a potential cost trap.

We have also made a calculation with an extremely cheap disposable diaper option:

Even if we consider the cheap Babylove diapers (dm's own brand), based on the above calculation, the total comes to €996. Here, too, there are costs for diaper accessories amounting to €561. In this extremely cheap case, the total cost amounts to €1,557.
